António Quaresma Coelho
António Quaresma Coelho has a degree and Master’s degree in Educational Sciences and a PhD in Education in the branch of Educational Administration and Policy (from the Institute of Education of the University of Lisbon).
His teaching activity is divided into two periods. The first (1978 to 1990) is characterized by the search for alternative models of pedagogical practice and marked by the principles of the new school (Rousseau) and modern school (Freinet) movements, participating in various pedagogical/ educational projects, such as Cooperation School (1981/82 to 1984/85 – highlighted by the Ministry of Education), the Integrated Education Project (1984) and the Minerva Project (1986 to 1990).
In 1990 he was invited by the Santillana Group to incorporate Constância Editores (in Portugal), having held the positions of executive editor, editorial director and director of the professional training business unit (blended learning modality), as well as member of the Innovation and Projects Department (based in Madrid) of the Santillana Group.
The second period of teaching activity began in 2002 and is marked by the Research component, both in relation to the analysis of the school as an organization, and the promotion of meaningful and self-regulated learning, having, in addition to teaching activity, developed research projects with direct intervention in the school (with students, teachers and principals) and was involved in the starting process of the Curricular Autonomy and Flexibility Project, at the invitation of the Secretary of State for Education of the 21st constitutional government.
He was a teacher at EB da Várzea de Sintra (an innovative school) in two periods (2002 to 2006 and 2017 to 2023) and in the context of the D. Carlos I School Cluster, to which that school belongs, he was co-author of the Educational Projects at EB da Várzea de Sintra (Projeto dar ASAS), coordinator of the 1st cycle department and responsible for coordinating the processes linked to the design of the Innovation Plans (2019/2020, 2020/2021 and 2021/2022) and for monitoring their Implementation. He was also a member of the Pedagogical Council, Coordinator of the National Arts Plan (2021 to 2023), Coordinator of the Comprehensive Mathematics Learning Program (2021 to 2023) of that School Cluster Group and member of the PAR-2 Project (2022 and 2023) with the Institute of Educational Assessment (IAVE).
He was co-founder of the “Rede Educação Século XXI” (21st Century Education Network) and president of “ACIRES, Associação Círculos de Inovação” (Innovation Circles Association) of that Network and is a member of the Learning Communities Network that that educational network became part of.
Despite being retired since April 1, 2023, his area of research and action continues to be Self-Regulation of Learning, Project/ Problem Based Learning and the school renewal, supporting educational organizations interested in developing change processes in their organizational and pedagogical action.
He is the author of several articles (in newspapers and magazines) and the book “Recriar a Escola Pública, Refundar o Sistema Educativo”, published by Edições Mahatma (2021).
